According to documents made public on Monday, Salt Lake City police suspected Melvin Shawn Rowland, who last week fatally shot student Lauren McCluskey on the University of Utah campus, of breaking into another woman’s residence twice in 2015.
In either of the two burglary complaints, Rowland was not accused of a crime. In a third incident in 2015, a woman claimed to be scared of Rowland, although it was she who was later detained on suspicion of stealing.
The four reports that Salt Lake City police released on Monday add to the picture that has been drawn of Rowland by authorities and by others who knew him since the night of Oct. 22 when he followed and killed McCluskey outside of her dorm. Dale Brophy, the chief of the University of Utah police, has referred to Rowland as a liar who exploited others to obtain a weapon, locate McCluskey, and kill her. Rowland has been characterised by other women who dated him as a manipulator who exhibited possessive and harassing behaviour.
Rowland was found guilty of sex crimes in 2004, received his first release in 2012, and was repeatedly returned to the Utah State Prison before receiving his final parole in April 2018. Six weeks after Rowland pled guilty to luring a juvenile online and attempting forceful sex assault, the Salt Lake City Police Department received its first report about him on April 27, 2004.
