Prospect Luke Prokop of the Nashville Predators is determined to make hockey a sport where everyone feels welcome, and he has no intention of letting anyone get in his way.
Prokop, the first openly gay player to sign with the NHL, paved the way for others in the sport and served as a major role model. Although the 20-year-old has contributed significantly to the game’s inclusiveness, he is frustrated by the lack of advancement at the top level of competition.
In a statement released Monday night, the 6-foot-6 defenseman reiterated his sentiments and called the recent trend of NHL teams and players skipping Pride celebrations “a step back for inclusiveness in the league.” Prokop wrote:
“Pride nights and Pride jerseys play an important role in promoting and respecting inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community and it’s disheartening to see some teams no longer wearing them or Others are focusing on the players who aren’t participating rather than the significance of the night itself, while others are embracing their significance.
Prokop made these remarks just a few days after James Reimer, the goaltender for the San Jose Sharks, cited his religious convictions as the reason he couldn’t participate in pregame warmups while sporting a Pride-themed shirt. Ivan Provorov, a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers, adopted a similar attitude earlier this season on the team’s Pride-awareness night.
Recently, the on-ice festivities for the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Minnesota Wild were cancelled when a number of players from each team objected to sporting Pride jerseys and wrapping their sticks in the rainbow-coloured tape during warmups.
For Prokop, hearing about those announcements was depressing. What’s worse, though, is how much focus they’ve diverted from how crucial it is to make everyone in the hockey community feel welcome. Prokop earned waves of love on social media after coming out as gay in July 2021, and the NHL decided to give $100,000 to a select set of LGBTQIA+ charities as a result.
Prokop, who is presently pursuing his dream of playing in the NHL, hopes that his efforts can benefit those in need and foster a positive hockey culture for all participants.
