In the women’s 200-meter backstroke, McLean broke Anna Simcic’s 14-year-old New Zealand record to take third place. McLean was one of the top picks to do well in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne last month, but she only managed three fourth-place finishes in the women’s 4×100 medley relay, the 100-meter backstroke, and the 50-meter backstroke. In the 200-meter backstroke, she ultimately won the bronze.

After she reeled off a fantastic backstroke leg in the medley, setting the New Zealand record in a time that would have won gold in the solo 100m backstroke race, it was evident she had not quite performed up to expectations in Melbourne.

She repeated the feat in Shanghai, swimming another lightning-quick backstroke leg to smash the record and propelling the 4x100m medley team to sixth place overall. She also achieved another New Zealand record yesterday by qualifying for the semifinals of the 50-meter backstroke, and teammate Liz Coster finished sixth.

Only five New Zealand swimmers have ever won a medal at the world championships, and McLean’s victory inspired another energetic night. In the third session, New Zealand swimmers competed in three finals and set three more national records, bringing the total to 13 finals and 12 records in the first three days, outperforming any previous team’s performance.

In her 200-meter backstroke final, McLean was fourth after 50 metres, third at the halfway stage, and she resisted the challenge of Alessa Filippi of Italy who overtook Melissa Ingram of New Zealand over the final 50 metres. Prior to Tayliah Zimmer of Australia, American Margaret Hoelzer took the lead right away and won the gold medal.

Simcic’s previous record of 2m 07.11s, established at the 1992 World Cup in Paris, was beaten by McLean’s performance of 2m 06.96s. The relay ran 4:02.75, shaving four seconds off the record pace they had set in the morning heats. The powerful Australians lit up the final with a world-record speed.

Dean Kent placed sixth in the 200m individual medley final, his second championship is final, in a time of 1 minute, 57.31 seconds. American Ryan Lochte won the event in a time that set a world record. The silver medalist from the Commonwealth Games Kent, 27, was unable to maintain his podium place during the last freestyle leg.
