Flint City Councilman Eric Mays is flamboyant and unapologetically aggressive, and he has a track record of unconventional behaviour over his years in local politics.
Police have frequently led the third-term city councilman out of open sessions while he was handcuffed. He verbally abused a reporter in the City Council rooms and pawned city laptops. He has participated in recall campaigns against prior mayors and filed numerous recall applications against council colleagues.
Recently, he constantly referred to the council chair as Hitler while giving the Nazi salute. He was the target of a threat from a city solicitor in the fall of 2019 that he would “crack him over the head.”
After being discovered in 2013 facing the wrong way on the motorway next to a disabled car, Eric Mays was convicted guilty of drunk driving and given a prison sentence outside the council chambers in 2016. He most recently got into a drunken brawl with Flint’s deputy chief of staff. One of Flint’s most vocal and well-known public figures is Mays.
