Anita Boateng News

The Conservative party is heavily influenced by the ghost of Margaret Thatcher. Throughout the summer leadership race, former prime minister Liz Truss was constantly compared to the three-time election victor Iron Lady, from her pussy bow blouses to her propensity for sitting on tanks. But Rishi Sunak, who spoke passionately about his admiration for Lady Thatcher and her dedication to solid finance, took the mantle of Thatcherite.

Sunak’s main responsibility is to provide strong economic management, just like Thatcher did in 1979. Sunak must avoid the minefield of impractical political decisions over tax and spending that are required to bring about economic stability. He is aware that supporting his party’s compromises and challenging choices as a whole is all that matters. He did this by borrowing a strategy from Thatcher. More “Wets” (of the One Nation Tory tradition) than “Thatcherites” made up her first Cabinet. Nothing less of a Cabinet of rivals can be said about Sunak’s debut.

Four types of MPs were chosen to sit at Sunak’s Cabinet table. The first, and most obvious, were Sunak’s supporters who stood by him throughout a challenging campaign. These individuals included Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden, Health Secretary Steve Barclay, Justice Secretary Dominic Raab, and Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride.

The second group was made up of supporters of Truss and Johnson, including James Cleverly, Thérèse Coffey, Party Chairman Nadhim Zahawi, and Chris Heaton-Harris (who handled the financials for Johnson’s most recent run for reelection).

The party’s top thinkers from all ideological strands made comprised the third group. One Nation Conservative favourites Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Security Minister Tom Tugendhat, along with Suella Braverman as Home Secretary and the incredibly gifted Kemi Badenoch as Trade Secretary, are now seated around a Cabinet table.

Last but not least, respected former Cabinet members who had spent some time on the sidelines, such as Transport Secretary Mark Harper and Minister of Development Andrew Mitchell, made their comebacks. With a single reshuffle, he assured his supporters that their loyalty would be rewarded, assured Truss and Johnson supporters that they had a crucial role to play, assured One Nation and ERG supporters that their voices mattered, and assured each former minister on the backbenches that there was a path back to power. The reorganisation was both kind and clever. similar to Sunak himself.

Now, governing the Cabinet won’t be simple after this reorganisation. Around that 30-person table in Downing Street, there will be a great deal of conflict and disagreement. It is unquestionably not the Cabinet that Sunak would have put together had he won the leadership competition during the summer.
